SEASON 4: PLAYER ROLES ; EPISODE 22: PLAYER ROLE (WINGER Type 2)

UPDATE: 2025

SME: Hey Soccermanagerite! How art though?

Soccermanagerite: “Not too good…”

SME: What happen? Did you lose to that Manager who’s playing a 4-4-2A with Bruno Fernandes and Christian Eriksen as his M(C)‘s?

Soccermangerite: “Yeah…” 🙄

SME: I know… Sucks, dosen’t it?

Now then, let’s get into today’s episode as we take a look at the second type of ‘Winger’ found within Soccermanager: The ‘Explosive Winger‘.

‘Explosive Wingers’ are very entertaining to watch since they possess some of the abilities that cause fear into an opposition’s defence. Although they might not be as technically gifted as their ‘Technical Winger‘ cousin, the physical attributes and ridiculous pace that they frequently showcase make them a nightmare to defend against since it dosen’t take long for them to get into top speed which makes them very difficult to defend when it comes to 1v1 situations.

ATTACKING PHASE

‘E.W’s’ also start off hugging the touch line and they tend to stay out there for majority of thier time on the pitch. But as soon as the ball gets around their area, they come alive and perform a host of different methods to get past their defender. They will collect the ball and simply run at the defence or make quick bursts in behind when the space is avaialble, and like I mentioned earlier, they’re so fast that once they get away from their opponent there’s no stopping them.

Another thing about ‘Explosive Wingers’ is that their first instinct when they get on the ball is always to take on their opponent. While a ‘Technical Winger‘ might look for a teammate in a better position,’ E.W’s’ are always thinking: “How can I beat this man?”. Because of this tendancy, most players of this elk are deemed quite “selfish” or “ball hoggers” (which could be a good or bad thing based on your style of play), so just keep this within your consideration.

DEFENSIVE PHASE

Almost no ‘Winger’ likes to defend, but what separates ‘E.W’s’ from ‘T.W’s’ is that they have the workrate necessary to put in a shift defensively. This is down to the fact that their game is mostly about using their physical capabilities, and ‘Explosive Wingers’ are usually one of the fittest players on the pitch. So, there are definitely an asset when your team doesn’t have the ball!

POSITIONAL TRAITS

Like I mentioned in yesterday’s episode, all ‘Wingers’ are capable of playing the AM(RL),F(RL) positions, but ‘E.W’s’ do not have the capability of playing as an AM(C) since their game is all about operating in the wide regions. So, once you have a ‘Winger’ who can only play in the AM(RL),F(RL) positions, you can be guaranteed that this player is an ‘Explosive Winger’.

KEY ATTRIBUTES (From SM25 and beyond)

Here are the key attributes that every ‘Explosive Winger’ possess:

Positioning
Movement
Dribbling
Crossing
Pace
Stamina
Work Rate
Flair

    1. Great question Adriano! It’s all about the use of your team instructions.

When you are inferior, your mentality should be normal or defensive, aim to play men behind ball, and you should press in your own half or own area, along with playing more defensive type of players within your starting X1.

When you are equal, you look to play an attacking game. Your other instructions can be the same but make sure that your mentality is set to Attacking

When you are superior, you should be looking to absolutely dominate, and this means that you press all over, never play men behind ball, play offside trap, and ALWAYS have an attacking mentality.

      Bigger hug!
