Season 12: Secret Code Episode 12 :Down Both Flanks and Direct

Are you punching the air too?

Unfortunately we have to make the Episode that we really didn’t want to make… But, in life, all good things must come to an end and we have to end season 12 today since there will be no looking at the following shithousery of tactical set ups (apologies to anyone who currently plays these at the moment… 😅):

1.Down Both Flanks and Long Ball (🤦‍♂️)

2.Down Both Flanks and Short (🤦‍♂️)

The above two simply make no sense and we’ve actually created an episode looking at various tactics that every one of us should never aim to use again so long as S.M.W is still a thing…

Anywho, let’s crack on with today’s epsiode.

The final style of play that we will be going through is the very popular D.B.F and Direct system. This tactical inception is quite famous due to its simplicity in use, with the main gist being to get the ball out wide to some skillful ballers who will aim to maneuver it into the box for some eager F(C)’s and box crashing M/AM(C)’s to pounce on… Although it is considered a throwback, there will forever be a spot for this tactical approach within the modern game and it brings us joy to be able to demonstrate the type of personnel that would benefit from this approach.

Pretty dope of us to complete this season with the old fashioned, never let you down formation that is the 4-4-2A, are we right?! 😎

Here we have a team that will do a steady job and will aim to implement every facet of tactical and individual innovation in order to make it quite a torrid time for any opposition involved. This XI is equipped with skill, creativity, strength, experience and match winners that are coming together to formalize an ideal plan in the pursuit of greatness (in what ever format that greatness can be obtained)

DEFENCE

As always, we start with the man dem at the back and right off the bat we have a back 5 well worthy of representing the D.B.F and Direct style of play with pride. Alex Meret in goal is the current Napoli No.1 and Italy No.2 who brings a sense of tranquil demeanor to his game while being an all action aggressive style GK in terms of his love for the acrobatic. He’s not necessarily the greatest in the world on the ball, but Italy aren’t too bogged down with producing ‘Modern Keepers’ so long as they have the capacity to arrogantly tell anyone willing to listen about the legends of the past such as Gianluigi Buffon and a potential legend of the present in Gianluigi Donnarumma who both aren’t great with the ball at their feet but are regarded as a top 5 within their respective generation, while looking at you dead in the eye with a cigar, glass of wine and some good ole Italian hand gestures telling the full story… 🚬🍷🤌 🇮🇹

In front of Meret, we have a traditional back 4 for a traditional system like the D.B.F and Direct in addition to two D(C)’s who balance each other out as one is the enforcer (‘Stopper’), with the other being the constructor (‘Ball Playing Defender’). We also have a ‘Fullback’ who plays a hybrid role of forming a back 3 while also being a supporting option to his attacking teammates, while the ‘Wingback’ on the opposite side bombs forward to the tune of some DJ Khladed ft. Lil Baby & Lil Durk (🎶 Imma turn up on this Wingers every CHANCE THAT I GET! 🎶 🏃💨)…

Let’s start out with the ‘Fullback’, Gonzalo Montiel who is one of the more reliable players within this team who keeps things steady without casuing too much of a fuss (he also has 2 cup winning penalty kicks under his resumé). Next, we have the Serbian beast of a D(C) in Niloka Milenković who is aggressive, nasty, and likes to put his head where it hurts. A newcomer has joined the Soccermanagerverse in the German international technican Waldemar Anton who is a former Stuttgart come Borussia Dortmund ‘Ball Playing Defender’ who’s had quite a breakthrough season that saw him make the final cut for Julian Nagelsmann’s Germany team at the Euros while also being considered the replacement for the Dortmund legend Mats Hummels. Lastly, we have the young Dutchman Hartman, who is seeking to make his opposition Fartman, as he goes on one of those ‘Wingback’ runs that makes his opposition pray that it’s his last 1 (🔥)

MIDFIELD

Let’s start in the central areas as we have two players that are more than capable of holding it down in the middle of the park as a pair. Boubacar Kamara is a D(C) turn DM(C) who has received quite a lot of accolades for his swift transition to the midfield due to his high level energy, his efficiency on the ball, and his bread and butter skill of cleaning up any danger to give his defence some leeway. Expect him to sit slightly deeper, protecting that backline with everything he’s got while his partner, the Dutchman Joey Veerman, seeks to get unto the ball and make his team tick. Standing at 185cm (6’1″), Veerman is quite reminiscent of Toni Kroos in terms of his playing style as he isn’t about any Flair but has quite a unique range of passing that will be quite effective within this team. Similarly to Kroos, he isn’t the most mobile but the beauty of the D.B.F’s is that the emphasis is to stretch the opposition out which will leave gaps for the likes of Veerman to “hide” his lack of mobility thus causing him to be more effective.

As Veerman is spraying those passes, two of the stars within this team will be licking their lips in anticipation for some 1 on 1 action. We start off with the Belgian starlet since it amazes us how Belguim have produced two of the best throwback ‘Wingers’ in the modern game in Jeremy Doku and Johan Bakayoko who will be receiving the ball quite often in this team while absolutely “skinning” his opposition for fun. As we’ve just mentioned, his style of ‘Explosive Winger’ is quite a throwback and most defenders have gotten so used to defending ‘Wide Forwards’ which basically means that Bakayoko will thrive in most matches even when coming up against the likes of Andy Robertson or Alfonso Davies (albeit those encounters will require him to play at his absolute best). On the opposite flank, we have more of a ‘Technical Winger’ who likes to glide past opponents with his close control skills while also drifting inwards from time to time to allow Hartman to overlap. Ofcourse we’re talking about the German late bloomer Vincenzo Grifo who has been balling out at SC Freiburg for the past 2 seasons. Although the D.B.F and Direct reacts better with two gun ho style ‘Wingers’ outwide, what Grifo brings is a bit of versatility in that he can drift into the midifeld whenever there is a need for extra numbers while also being more of a predictable creator that his F(C)’s can read compared to the raw, unfiltered, exciting unpredictability that Johan brings to the situation

FORWARDS

Up front, we have 2 varying style of Forwards who will work very well as a duo in the superstar of the team Ivan Toney, and the potential “player’s player” Angel Correa.

Toney is arguably the best 90 rated player within the entirety of S.M.W and it’s quite a shock that (ban aside) he’s not at least a 91. He is great with the ball at his feet, has excellent link up play, phenomenal in the air and very lethal in and around the box. Expect him to lead the line in his arrogant style that has seen him turn into a top player in what seems like overnight.

In some teams, there’s this one player who may not do anything in terms of numbers but every single player within the squad absolutely loves and that player in today’s team is no other than the Argentinian Angel Correa who won’t give you anything less than an 100% effort game after game. As a ‘General Forward’, Angel will be like his namesake and do basically everthing on the pitch such as running the channels, hassling his opponents, and running in behind. Ivan is quite the efficient passer similar to a Gianluca Scammaca, and with Correa’s non stop energy, expect Ivan to also load up on a few assists with his Argentinian partner by his side! 😎

PLAYER INSTRUCTIONS

The Italian Shotstopper gets the armband for this team with Milenković his second in command, Grifo’s technique will come in handy as the designated set piece taker, Veerman will have the all too important job to get on the ball and spray passes into those Flanks, nuff said about Ivan Toney’s Penalty Prowess (👀), and he also leads the line as a 92 rated player playing in a 90 rated player’s body…

😮‍💨

We’ve ended another one… 😌

Boy oh boy was this a blast to create!

There’s no time to waste, since you can clearly see that we’ve had some changes within S.M.W during the course of season 12’s creation. So, don’t take your foot off the gas cause we’ve got something very special in store for you Soccermanagerites in no time whatsover! 🤩

Until then, stay tactical! ⚽ 🧠 ✌️
