Season 10: SM24 ATTRIBOOSTS: EPISODE 20

Let’s finish this season off with a bang! 😁

João Mario… The Portugese Midfielder who goes under the radar but is appreciated by almost every teammate that he has ever played with. He’s so under the radar that his SM24 attributes are completely off and we have to end what has been another banger of a season with enough clarity just in case you consider using him within your various teams throughout your Managerial career.

SM24 ATTRIBUTES

Y’know, we can understand why certain footballers get confused for being someone they’re not in terms of their actual style of play…

Take Fabián Ruiz:

A Spanish M(C) who displays technical finesse when on the ball but is actually a ‘Box to Box’ Midfielder who just happens to be really good in possession…

Or Serge Gnabry:

A player that predominantly starts out wide and is a decent 1v1 dribbler, but is actually a Wide Forward

The confusion behind players like these 2 is excusable since they’ll do a solid job for any team in both roles, but for João Mario to be considered a ‘Playmaker’ when most of his time playing in the spotlight saw him being operated as a hardworking M(R), M(L), or a late arriver into the box M(C) during his time at Inter Milan just shows us true footy fans that there’s a lack of appreciation for the so called “fringe” or “back up” players…

Mário is the kind of player you’d want next to you if you were the creative one in the midfield while being honeslty useless if you were the industrious one and him the orchestrator. Fair not Soccermanagerite, let us explain:

TECHNICAL ATTRIBUTES

Tekkers aren’t really Mário’s thing… He’s a player who simply never stops running. Decent on the ball? Yeah, he’s up to the standards that you’d expect from a professional Footballer playing in Europe, but never the man tasked with “breaking down the opposition’s mid block with his keen eye for a pass”… What he strives at technically is his Movement towards the attacking third, as well as his positional awareness. Everything else is good enough to play in a midfield at his level, so long as he’s got the right kind of players beside him.

WHAT WE THINK

PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES

We can forgive these attributes since his overall profile is not up to standard. You just have to trust us when we say that this lad never stops running…

WHAT WE THINK

MENTAL ATTRIBUTES

WHAT WE THINK

We almost forgot to mention that João is yet another versatile player (which makes him the 5th one of those within this season), and versatility and things like Composure and Concentration go hand in hand since being able to play in so many different positions means that you’ve gotta be comfortable enough to calm yourself down whilst receiving the ball in the left half space, while making a central run into the box, or if playing as a DM(R); it also means that you’ve gotta be focused when tracking your ‘Wingback’, when keeping your cover shadow on the opposition’s ‘No.8’, or dealing with the out to in” runs of Vinicius Jr...

In addition to these attributes, João is also a bit more aggressive than he’s been given credit for but isn’t too worried about getting into physical scruffles since his mind will be on his box to box responsibilities #heNEVERstopsrunning

And like that. We GONE!

Well, not yet…

It is indeed the end of season 10 (😭), but there’s something that’s been bubbling under the surface… Something that was once considered “surplus to requirements“, “finished”, “not good anymore“, “focused more on his hairstyles than his actual Football“. They’ve said all they had to say about him and yet he’s the one with the last laugh, as his performances over the past few seasons have reminded them all of what a player he is. Over here at The Soccermanager Blog, we like to call his kind a: ‘SMW Superstar‘.

In a bit… ✌️ 🇫🇷
