For the past few episodes we’ve taken a look at how to deal with the pressures of relegation, and become the champions via winning the league. In today’s episode, we take a look at the best strategy that The Soccermanager Blog personally believes one should use in order to become kings of the cup. Winning the cup competitions is something to truly be grateful of, and it also takes a particular strategy that you can use in order to constantly progress within each round in addition to actually ensuring that each player within your team gets an adequate amount of gametime.
Here are some of the strategies in which I believe will be beneficial towards you going deep into those juicy cup competitions:
#1: Build a cup team spine
If it’s one thing that you will come to realize is the fact that one of the most important elements of a proper team is to ensure that you have a built in spine that plays every game as long as they are fit. Although you will need a minimmin of 4 players to make up your spine within your first X1, the cup is where most managers tend to do a lot of rotations in addition to giving some of our young gems the opportunity to showcase their talent. You could actually build a spine of up to 3 players who are the ones that will play every cup match without fault.

#2: Identify who your rotational and back up players are as early as you can
Doing this is the best way for you to have an idea into who will be the players that will be making most of their appearances throughout the entirety of these cup runs in addition to ensuring that you have even more clarity pertaining who your key starters are and who are not
#3: Remain loyal to your chosen cup players
Although this one isn’t necessarily required in order for you to acheive cup success, what is success without true integrity? Just imagine how you’d feel if your manager spoke to you about your role in the team, gave you the first few matches within the cup, only to then sack you in the semi finals or quarter finals because you’re an 85 rated player and your manager has a 91 rated player that he’ll give his first appearance in the cup too. Now, this does not mean that you cannot add some of your highly rated players during the latter stages of these competitions, but take into consideration who has been performing thier best within the cup competitions before you make your final decision.
#4: GO ALL OUT IN THE LATTER STAGES OF THE CUP!
When it comes to navigating a cup we must have the understanding that these matches are ‘one offs’ (unlike the league where there’s actually a lot more bites at the cherry), and once you’ve been knocked out, there isn’t another opportunity until next season. Therefore, if we’re gonna be eliminated, it is imperative that we go out giving absolutely everything that we possibly can which can only be done by ensuring that we play the latter stage matches with an ‘Attacking’ Mentality even if we tend to play ‘Normal’. The only exception is if you’re someone who actually plays a bit more pragmatically therefore there is no need to actually change anything.
I’m more and more fascinated by these articles every day.
