Season 7: SMW Superstars Episode 16: Mohamed Salah

The Egyptian King has arrived! 🇪🇬

Welcome back to yet another blog post soccermanagerite. I hope you’re ready, cause we will be getting into high impact in terms of the ballers whom we’ll be discussing from this point onwards. We’ve reached the pinnacle of World Class where we have the certified match winners, the goal scorers, the assisters and the ‘Player of the season’ nominees (well, if you consider SM’s metrics)

In episode 16, we take a look at yet another Chelsea reject (how awful have they been from this point of view?). Salah started off his career in his native Egypt where he was playing for Al Mokawloon at the tender age of 14 years old (so that means Mo started his professional career at   age 14!). He was being noticed by many scouts across Europe who had a look at the then ‘Winger‘. It turned out that Switzerland’s FC Basel took a liking to him, and he was then eventually signed where he would go on to perform wonders (especially in the champions league, particularly against a future club) until he was then captured by Chelsea back in 2014, but as you already know, he didn’t seem to be the right fit for them and was shipped out on loan to Fiorentina. After his loan spell, he signed a permanent contract with AS Roma where he then performed admirably which got him on the wishlist for Liverpool. He signed for the Reds in 2017, and 204 goals later, it is safe to say that Chelsea really f*cked up…… (lol)

PLAYER BIO

Mo is the second ’96’ rated player whom we’ve looked on so far within this season, and it’s safe to say having a player of his quality within your set up could potentially be a game changer due to his world class qualities and never say die attitude

BEST ATTRIBUTES WITHIN SM24

BEST ROLES

When you think of Salah at his best, you remember the electrifying partnership he had with Sadio Mané and Roberto Firmino, and it plays a huge role behind my decision to showcase Mo as your ‘Wide Forward’ off the right of a front 3
As great as he is off the right, Mo is now 31 and maybe you were thinking of trying to ease the defensive responsibilities that he will have. So, you could always play him down the middle as your F(C) where his best (and only) role will be as your ‘General Forward’
Since Mo is comfortable playing in the F(C) position, you can consider partnering him up with another to create a duo strike force in formations such as the 4-4-2 or 3-5-2, for example
Speaking of back 3 formations, I personally believe that Mo would be a terrific ‘Wide Forward’ playing from the right of a formation like the 3-4-3
One thing that I will like to mention is that Mohammed Salah must be considered a Striker who plays outwide which means that he will rarely stay in that wide position since he is very driven and hungry to score goals. This is why I personally believe that players like Mo, Sadio Mané, and Cristiano Ronaldo shouldn’t play off the flanks in a 4-2-3-1B since this formation requires a specific type of player, and Mo is not the right fit to play there

HOW TO BEST USE HIM

If you truly want to get the most out of Salah, then your best bet would be to play him off the right in a front 3. I’m sure you’ve noticed that I have pointed his arrow to ‘attacking’, and although you do not necessarily need to do this, you will find out shortly as to why he would be better equipped with this use of his arrow based on which teammate would get the best of him.

WHO ARE THE BEST TEAMATES?

There should be no debate that Mo is indeed a world class player and arguably the best player in his position. So, what this means is that your set up should aim to get him playing on smoke since he will be the one to win you trophies. Therefore, the key teamates that will turn Salah into a beast will be a ‘Wingback’ who occupies the wide region when Salah goes centrally, a ‘Playmaker’ that will aim to get Mo in on goal, and, most importantly, a ‘Deep lying Forward’ who will drop into the midfield to open up gaps for Mo to get into (hence why we’ve chosen to point their arrows)
When choosing to play Salah as your F(C), his most important teammate will be your ‘Playmaker’ pulling the strings in the midfield. It must also be taken into consideration that Mo plays like a ‘General Forward’ which means that he won’t just stay up front all the time, which is why a ‘Wide Forward’ would be essential for Mo’s movement to be complimented
One very important thing that we must remember is the fact that Mo is not an out and out F(C), so we should never tick the ‘Use Target Man’ box when he is our No.9
If choosing to play Mo in a front 2 in a formation like a 4-4-2A, then you’ll want to ensure that you have that mandatory ‘Playmaker’ within the midfield, while his front partner can be anyone from a ‘GF’ or a ‘TM’. If you choose a ‘GF’, he must have great movement, while any style of ‘TM’ (Robust, Explosive or Technical) will work well alongside Mo
If playing Mo in a formation like the 3-4-3, then you should aim to have the teammates that is similar to the 4-3-3 formation

Mohamed Salah has really come in leaps and bounds ever since his move to Liverpool, and we can expect that he will continue to shine for the reds as he is now the certified main man at the club.

Up next, we head to a different team in England to take a look at a pretty similar player to Salah that likes to perform on the opposite side of the pitch. Get your cameras ready… 😉
