Season 6: SM23 (Tactics Page)Episode 2: What tactics am I thinking of?

Welcome back to Episode 2 Soccermanagerite! I hope you are well and at the upper echelon of your respective league table as we’re about to go on a quest of becoming the greatest players of this game that SM23 (or any other variant) has ever seen!

In today’s episode we’ll be going over what I am currently thinking of doing for my side Brighton during the 22-23 season. If you were staying up to date with season 5 you will know that we have went through every important area found within SM23. Therefore all that is left to do is to get the ball rolling via playing my first match which will be a Preseason friendly match against English championship side Sunderland. I will be explaining every tactical decision that I have chosen to make and why I made that decision in the first place. 👍

Firstly, it’s important to always identify who you believe are your best starting X1 based on your player prefrence and style of play. Based on what I currently have within my squad (and since I’ll also won’t be making any new signings during my first season in charge), here is the team whom I’ve chosen as my best X1:

GK: Sanchez
D: Veltman
Webster
Dunk
Estupiñan

M: Mac Allister
Gross
Caicedo

F: March
Welbeck
Mitoma

Now, this might not be the best formation based on real life Brighton’s love affair with a back 3, but I personally believe that I will get the best out of this X1 as it offers a decent balance from defence to attack. The only real issue is that Welbeck isn’t a type of Number 9 to play up top alone but I have a plan for how to utilize him to get the best out of him. The reason for the 4-3-3B is to get Mitoma on the field as he is an absolute gem of a player that I am looking forward to using. Oh, and I also had to get March into the X1 since he is one of our better players and has that needed experience from the right.

Now then, we have to give each player their role that will suit them well based on their player profile and the way in which I want them to play. I will explain my reasoning under the following image:

Okay, so here’s my reasoning behind every player’s role that I have given them: Firstly, we intend to press, therefore we will need Sanchez to operate more like a Modern Keeper and sweep things up. Veltman, Webster and Dunk will form a ‘back 3’ when we are in posession, with Webster in the centre being the one starting our plays from deep as our Ball Playing Defender; Veltman will play a supporing role as our FullBack; while Dunk will keep things simple on the ball as our Stopper, with Estupiñan bombing forward as much as he can as our Wingback. Alexis Mac Allister is our metronome and is responsible for dictating our play as the Deep-lying Playmaker, while Gross looks to get into more advanced positions to be an extra attacker as our Floating Advanced Playmaker, with Caicedo using his endless energy to get up and down as the Box to Box Midfielder. In The final third, rather than playing Mitoma as a Winger, he will be tasked with being an extra goal threat by coming infield off his perferred foot as our Wide Forward; Sulley March will maintain our width on the opposite side as our Winger, and Welbeck (who I was considering playing as a Finisher at first) will maintain his perferred role as a General Forward where he gets the freedom to go wherever he needs to in order to play based on the situation of a match.
Just a quick note pertaining my current bench as I have some good options who will slot right into this set up with the likes of Jakub Moder, Adam Lallana and Julio Enciso all being able to play in the various roles that have been given to the above team.

STRATEGY

As I stated earlier, we will be going into every single aspect of the tactics page which means that there will be an indepth explanation of the ‘Strategy’ area which is located if you swipe left towards the ‘Team Instructions’ area:

INSTRUCTIONS

Player instructions are pretty self explanatory and very similar to the player instructions within SM Worlds. I’ve already went through an entire list of all the best set piece takers within this game in Season 4: Episode 34 that you can give a look at by clicking the following link: https://thesoccermanageronline.sport.blog/2023/03/14/season-4-player-roles-episode-34-a-set-piece-masterclass/

GENERAL

The general area is ofcourse another important area which we have to ensure we get the right balance for since we do not want to be chopping and changing things too often throughout the season:

ATTACK

Another crucial area that we definitely need to get into more detail about as this is arguably the area that is often misundersttod by many players of this game. Mark my words: If you do not get this area right then your playing time of SM23 will seem like hell:

DEFENCE

Lastly, we have the defence area which is important to back up everything that your team does on the ball:

And there you have it bro. This is how I will intend to have my Brighton team play throughout the course of this seaon. Starting from tomorrow, we will be going over each item found within the team instuctions area in order for you get a detailed understanding of how each item works so you’re never left feeling confused ever again! See you in a bit. ✌️
