UPDATE: SUMMER 2025
IT’S THE MOMENT YOU’VE BEEN WAITING FOR!
THE BOYZ AT THE TOP!
THE GOAL SCORERS!!
THE ASSIST MAKERS!!!
THE KEY TO ENDLESS TROPHIES!!!!
Dramatic? For good reason, of course! The attacking players within Soccermanager are absolutely key to ensuring that you’re able to go all the way in the league as well as within cup competitions, and it is beyond important that you find the right balance of attackers based on the other players you have within your starting XI. So, with that being said, let’s dive into today’s episode.
We’re taking a look at the ‘Winger’ role today and, just like the ‘Advanced Playmaker’ role, there are 2 different types of ‘Wingers’ found within Soccermanager and the utilization of each will be important in order to truly get the best out of them. The two types are called: ‘Technical Wingers’ and ‘Explosive Wingers’. In today’s episode, we’ll be taking a look at the ‘Technical Winger’.
First things first, the primary role of EVERY ‘Winger’ is to hug the touchline, provide the necessary width needed to stretch the opposition’s defence, and create space for teammates. The ‘Technical Winger’ is a player who does not possess a lot of pace or appetite to make runs “in behind” his opposition, but they are brilliant with the ball at their feet. They always prefer to get the ball to feet, they enjoy being creative through their range of passing, and they also like to move inwards towards the centre of the pitch to get more involved within the game.
‘Technical Wingers’ also have very good vision and although you can use any tempo while playing with them, they thrive more in a shorter passing and slower tempo styles.
ATTACKING PHASE
Like I mentioned earlier, every ‘Winger’s’ sole responsibility is to hug the touchline in order to provide the width for their team, but when a ‘Technical Winger’ receives the ball, their first instinct will be finding a way of creating space for their teammates. So, what this means is whenever a ‘Technical Winger’ gets unto the ball they will be looking to make a pass into a teammate or use their technical dribbling skills to draw opponents near them to create more space for a teammate to operate in rather than aiming to take on their opponent. When the ball is on the opposite side of the field, they like to move into central regions where they can get unto the ball in order to not feel “cold” as well as getting the opportunity to operate within the number 10 region between the lines.

DEFENSIVE PHASE
No matter what the style of ‘Winger’, they all have the same responsibilties when it comes to the defensive part of their game. They have to track their fullback, provide support for teammates, and get back into their defensive position in order to maintain the team’s defensive shape. But unfortunately, most ‘Technical Wingers’ tend not to be the most disciplined defensively as they have a similar mindset to the ‘Classic no.10’ in that they possess such great techinque it makes them believe that they can get away with “cheating” defensively. Something you should take into consideration when organizing your team instructions.
POSITIONAL TRAITS
All ‘Wingers’ are capable of playing in the AM,F(RL) positions, but what enables a player to be considered a ‘Technical Winger’ is if he is capable of playng in the AM(C) position (UPDATE: with the exception of one player). Remember earlier I stated that ‘Technical Wingers’ like to drift into the centre of the pitch to get unto the ball, and the reason they can do this is down to their ability to play in those no.10 areas.
So, whenever you see a player who can play AM(RLC),F(RL), just know that there’s a chance that this player is a ‘Technical Winger’.
KEY ATTRIBUTES (from SM25 and beyond)
Now, not because a payer can play in the above positions means that he should be given the role as your ‘Technical Winger’ within your X1 (UPDATE: just realized that the above statement is quite contradictory… 😅) . The following are the key attributes that ‘T.W’s’ must have a high rating of at least 70+ on (unless they are youth players) based on SM singular player Attributes page. These will help you identify what to look out for from your ‘Technical Winger’:
Positioning
Dribbling
Crossing
Control
Passing
Creativity
