As I mentioned, the 4-4-2 formation has a wide variety of different set ups and today we’re going to take a look at one of those variations: the 4-4-2B
The 4-4-2B is very similar to the 4-4-2A with the major difference being the approach in Central Midfield as it has a designated Defensive Midfielder and Attacking Midfielder. Make no mistake, this formation is solely focused on getting the best out of the Attacking Midfielder, so anyone who uses this formation must build the entire team around him. The reason for this is because most of the team will have to sacrifice their own game in order to get the best out of your Attacking Midfielder (who, in my opinion should be a genuine 10 in the mold of an Odegaard or Maddison). This formation is normally confused with the upcoming formation within this series due to the similarilties in their set up, but we’ll cross that bridge when we get there.

PROS
*Attacking Midfilder gets a lot of joy in this formation
*Provides an attacking threat at all times due to at least 3 players constantly getting into the box
CONS
*Majority of the rest of the team will have to sacrifice their own game to get the best out of the system
*Only allows you to play with 1 Winger outwide as playing both will cause your DM to have too much covering to do
*DM must be an expert ball winner which could mean that he’s not as capable on the ball
A very interesting formation that I believe has its benefits, but one that I wouldn’t personally play. What about you though? What do you think of the 4-4-2B? I’ve realized that we’re in season 3 and I’ve yet to ask you soccermanagerites to share your opinions about these blogs. 😅 I’d love to hear what you have to say!
