Welcome to the start of the series that many of you soccermanagerites are extremley familiar with. It’s time for the 4 at the back formations!
In today’s blog, we start this series off with the the premium formation in football, the one that every player within soccermanager is familiar with, the one that you see as the very first formation when you start to manage a new team. Yes lads, we’re talking about the globetrotter, the king itself: 🎺4 4 2!!!🎺 With all my enthusiam towards writing about it, I’m actually not that big of a fan of the 4-4-2 formation…..lol, but that’s only because of personal preference. This formation has no flaws and is the most balanced within the entirety of football.
Consisting of 4 Defenders, 2 Central Midfielders, 2 Wide Midfielders and 2 Forwards, there are soooo many different ways to use this formation and it basically works with almost every pattern of play (barring one or two.) It’s the best formation for newbies and still a staple for experienced players alike. This formation has been around for over a century and it is widely consistered one of the first ever used for systematic football. A joy to behold indeed.

PROS
*Provides a balance in all three third’s of the pitch (defensive third, middle third, attacking third)
*Can be used in a variety if ways
*Wide Midfielders can be Wing Backs, Wingers, or Advanced Playmakers
*It’s balanced structure can handle pressure even against a midfield 3
CONS
*There’s no room to play Wide Forwards or No. 10’s in preffered positions
*Despite it’s balance, formation can still be suceptible against a 2-1 set up in the midfield (in particular against the 4-2-3-1 A and 4-2-3-1 B)
This formation dosen’t end here as it has a few variations that we’ll be discussing within the next few episodes. Until then, soccermanagerite!
